Indigenous people have experienced marginalization and historical exclusion from many healthcare systems as a result of chronic discrimination. Many Indigenous people have proudly served in the United States Armed Forces, comprising the largest demographic group per capita among veterans. Despite this enduring commitment to their country, Indigenous veterans still experience poorer healthcare outcomes, more poverty, lower educational attainment, and generally poor wellbeing compared to non-Indigenous veterans. All veterans deserve equitable oral health in a culturally responsive way that meets their unique oral healthcare needs. This panel discussion will explore the issue of oral health disparities among Indigenous veterans while sharing resources, stories, and the historical context of Indigenous military service. Through engaging dialogue and shared insights, attendees will gain perspective in supporting the oral health and wellbeing of Indigenous veterans and understand actionable next steps toward advancing oral health equity.
